How it works
- For each person, the calculator adds up what they paid for the group.
- It then works out their share: each expense is split equally between the people it was for, so someone who skipped an activity doesn't pay towards it.
- The difference is their balance. People who paid more than their share are owed money, and people who paid less owe money.
- Finally it settles up: whoever owes the most pays whoever is owed the most, and so on until everyone is even.
Worked example
Alice, Ben and Chloe go away for the weekend. Alice books the cottage for £360.00, Ben does a food shop for £84.00, and Chloe pays £50.00 for a wine tasting that only she and Alice went to.
- They spent £494.00 between them.
- Alice paid £360.00 and their share is £173.00, so Alice is owed £187.00.
- Ben paid £84.00 and their share is £148.00, so Ben owes £64.00.
- Chloe paid £50.00 and their share is £173.00, so Chloe owes £123.00.
- To settle up, Chloe pays Alice £123.00 and Ben pays Alice £64.00.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the smallest number of payments?
It keeps the number of payments low: each payment clears at least one person's balance, so a group never needs more than one fewer payment than it has people. Occasionally a cleverer arrangement could save a payment in a large group, but the amounts each person ends up paying or receiving are always the same.
What if someone didn't join in with everything?
Each expense has its own "Split between" list. Untick anyone who didn't take part, and the cost is shared only between the people left.
Can I split something unequally?
Each expense is split equally between the people selected. To split unequally, enter it as separate expenses, for example one for the shared part and one for the extra that only some people had.
How do I share the results with the group?
Press "Share results" to get a link. Anyone who opens it will see the same expenses and who owes whom, and can change anything they need to.
Why are some amounts a penny different?
When an expense doesn't divide exactly, one or two people pay a penny more so the shares add up to the full amount. This keeps everyone's balances adding up to exactly zero.
